Week 1 Sisseton, South Dakota
My first week of the REHPS program was great. The place we were set up in was very well equipped and had everything we needed to make us feel right at home. The hospital staff was very welcoming and had a “meet and greet” our first day for us to get acquainted with everyone. Throughout this week, I had the opportunity to accompany a variety of healthcare professionals including physicians, physical therapist and nurses. I am very thankful for this experience and excited to continue!
This week I was in Britton, SD at Quarve Drug which is a small town, independently owned retail pharmacy. The pharmacy staff was very friendly and welcoming. On the first day, the pharmacist asked me what I knew and if I was comfortable doing everything she did. I told her I would love to do everything she does so she allowed me to enter orders into the computer, counsel patients, fill prescriptions and perform various other tasks throughout the week. This pharmacy supplied medications for the hospital and assisted living center in Britton, SD. I had the opportunity to go to the hospital and assisted living center with the pharmacist and help her with her duties at those sites. This was a very unique experience because it is completely different from the retail pharmacy in Sioux Falls that I work at and it gave me the opportunity to see how an independently owned pharmacy runs.
The last week of the program was filled with many emotions. It was hard to say goodbye to so many nice people. I had such a wonderful experience in Sisseton and got the opportunity to work with and learn from a ton of great health care professionals. I also met a few of pharmacists and got contact information during my time at Sisseton that I will use in the future. I want to thank all the community members for making my stay memorable and a special thank you to the hospital staff. I would be interested in returning to Sisseton to do a rotation my P4 year!
