About the 2011 REHPS Experience
My experience in Redfield has opened my eyes to the unique challenges and rewards of practicing medicine in rural South Dakota. There aren’t many clinical experiences or rotations where after your work in the clinic is done you head a couple of miles out of town to hit up the local fishing hot spot. It was also exciting to be on call, and not knowing what will walk through the doors of the ER in the middle of the night. The mixture of clinic and hospital experiences gave me a crash course in rural medicine, and has spiked my interest in Rural Primary Care as a future practice. Even if I do not end up practicing in a rural area, I will have a great amount of respect for colleagues who do practice rural medicine. The REHPS was a great experience, and I would recommend it to any health profession student with an interest in rural medicine.
